Opening Reception for Figurative Encounters

Figurative Encounters
New Art@Work Exhibition
Opening Reception February 7th, 2020 6-8pm

Figurative Encounters opens with a public reception on Friday, February 7th from 6pm – 8pm at the Art@Work Gallery space. The exhibition features Long Beach artist Virginia Broersma and Angels Gate Studio Artist Anna Erneholm at Art@Work Gallery in Long Beach.

In Virginia Broersma’s paintings, limbs, crevices, rolls and bulges twist and contort around each other, pantomiming the language of the figure, while not being a literal depiction. By doing this, Broersma is confounding the viewer’s ability to make judgments based on criteria that have traditionally been associated with figurative painting, such as beauty and ideal form.

Anna Erneholm’s sculptures ebb and flow between abstract and representational iterations of bodily form. Her works are tactile, with organic undulating curves that contrast the industrial materiality of wood, ceramic, and stone. Erneholm demonstrates an intuitive language, which depicts bodily presence through abstracted form.

The Art@Work collaboration bridges Long Beach and San Pedro together through artistic representation. Co-curated by Angels Gate Cultural Center and the Arts Council for Long Beach, artists are exposed to audiences on opposite sides of the port. Artists are curated from the Arts Council for Long Beach Artist Registry and Angels Gate Studio Artists.

Art@Work is in the IDEA, Precision Dynamics International space located at 100 Oceangate, Suite 375 (SE corner of Ocean Blvd and World Trade Center) Long Beach, CA 90802. The exhibition will be open by appointment only or can be viewed from the walkway on World Trade Center.

The opening reception for Resonance, with Daniel Barajas and Vanessa Madrid was held on August 23, 2019.

Opening Reception for Resonance, Aug 23

Art@Work’s third rotation will include Long Beach based artist Daniel Barajas and San Pedro artist Vanessa Madrid in a showcase of vibrant contemporary painting and sculpture entitled Resonance.  The space will, for the first time in our partnership, exhibit work that is geometric and vividly colorful.

Both artists use their work to explore the geometry in the organic and sensual.  Through the investigation of spatial resonance in both of their works, they find the connections and tensions intrinsic in natural relationships.

The opening reception for the three-month exhibition at Art@WorkResonance will take place on August 23rd from 6-8pm. 100 Oceangate, Suite 375 (street-level northwest corner) Long Beach, CA 90802.  The exhibition will be open by appointment only or can be viewed from the walkway on the west side of the building.
