OPENING RECEPTION THURSDAY, JUNE 20, 2019, 6- 8PM
Art@Work is a new collaboration initiated by Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) and it brings together IDEA, Precision Dynamics International, and the Arts Council for Long Beach for a three month rotating exhibition of varied artistic voices of the South Bay.
In its second iteration, Art@Work is proud to present Long Beach based artist Annie Stromquist and San Pedro artist WS Milner in an exploration of the intimate and otherworldly through print and sculpture.
WS Milner, a multi-disciplinary artist working out of AGCC, explores the idea of myth and histories both created and uncovered in her sculpture. Her reliquary of sculptural insects, goddesses, and flora recall the feeling of wonder in an imaginative world. As she notes, “ancient things still embody the essence of something crucial. They’re reminders that we’re all part of a very old story.”
Annie Stromquist’s intimate screenprints and drawings, in conversation with Milner’s sculpture, capture a similar sense of the ethereal and connection to the earth. Her works on paper explore the human condition through a poetic lens, working with abstracted but recognizable imagery. The compositions often appear minimal, with empty space used as an active presence.
The Art@Work collaboration bridges two port hubs, Long Beach and San Pedro, through artistic representation. Co-Curated by AGCC and the Arts Council for Long Beach, each organization is given an opportunity to introduce an artist to a new audience. The curators pair artwork through the Arts Council for Long Beach’s Artist Registry with Angels Gate studio artists. The gallery space at I.D.E.A., Precision Dynamics International provides a place for artists to create a dialogue through art and conversations.
Art@Work will host an opening reception for the three-month exhibition Uncommon Grounds: The Works of Annie Stromquist and WS Milner on June 20th from 6-8pm. 100 Oceangate, Suite 375(street-level northwest corner) Long Beach, CA 90802. The exhibition is currently open by appointment only or can be viewed from the walkway on the west side of the building.
